Treatments

This page has short descriptions, but there are longer descriptions and more in depth information in the specific pages for each condition in the drop down menu or simply click the button to learn more about each condition. Downloadable patient information can be found in the Patient Info section.

Nerve Compression - Carpal or Cubital Tunnel

Nerve compression typically causes pain, pins and needles, tingling or numbness in the territory of the nerve which is being compressed. In carpal tunnel syndrome this is usually the thumb, index and middle fingers, and in Cubital Tunnel syndrome the ring and little fingers. Decompression surgery releases the ligament over the nerve to relieve the symptoms. I offer minimal access carpal tunnel release surgery performed using Ultrasound guidance so there is only a pinprick scar and recovery can be quicker. WWW.spirecut.com has more information about these instruments and technique.

This NHS England decision making tool can help you decide if having surgery is right for you. https://www.england.nhs.uk/publication/decision-support-tool-making-a-decision-about-carpal-tunnel-syndrome/

Trigger Finger or Thumb

Trigger digits occur when the tendons get "stuck" within their lining causing the finger or thumb to stick in a bent position having to be then forcibly straightened. Sometimes they get stuck in a straight position unable to bend. Trigger release cuts the thickened lining over the tendon allowing it to run smoothly again. I offer minimal access surgery using Ultrasound guided small instruments so there is only a pinprick scar and recovery can be quicker. WWW.spirecut.com has more information about the instruments and technique.

Dupuytrens Contracture Surgery

Dupuytrens contracture is a condition, often inherited, which causes nodule, cords and pits to occur in the hands sometimes leading to fingers being drawn down in a permanently bent position. I can offer both needle aponeurotomy / fasciotomy and open fasciectomy techniques to enable the fingers to be straightened and become functional again. This NHS England decision making tool can help you decide if surgery is right for you or which type. https://www.england.nhs.uk/publication/decision-support-tools-making-a-decision-about-dupuytrens-contracture/

Thumb Arthritis

Thumb arthritis can cause pain and stiffness in the base of your thumb, making it difficult to grip and pinch objects. I offer joint replacement at the base of the thumb using a ball and socket implant to restore movement and grip. The implant which I use is called the "MAÏA" from Groupe Lepine. I also offer trapeziectomy which is the traditional operation for thumb base arthritis. Not everone with arthritis in the base of the thumb is suitable for a joint replacement procedure. See my information leaflet for the differences between these two procedures. WWW.Thumbreplacement.com has more information about this implant and the surgery.

Finger Arthritis

Arthitis can occur in any of the knuckles of the fingers causing swelling, pain and deformity. I can offer joint replacement or fusion procedures to help improve pain and function where pain is limiting hand activities due to these problems. I use the Digitalis joint implants which are a silicone hinged spacer from BRM extremities.
